Fábrica de Polpas Araguaia

Indigenous People(s): Various
Country: Brazil
Product(s): Fruit pulp
Description: The Fábrica Araguaia Polpa de Frutas was created in 2005 by the Associação de Educação e Assistência Social Nossa Senhora da Assunção (ANSA) in the municipality of Sao Félix do Araguaia (Mato Grosso). The principal objective of this project is to generate income for the farming families and landholders from the agrarian reform in Sao Félix, while also promoting conservation of the environment and native fruit species. There are currently 300 residents of Sao Félix do Araguaia taking part in the company. Through the association between ANSA and the municipality of Sao Félix, part of the fruit pulp is directed to educational social programs and to school lunches throughout the city, thanks in part to Brazilian policies such as the Programa de Adquisición de Alimentos (PAA) and the Programa Nacional de Alimentación Escolar (PNAE). Another portion of the pulp is sold to stores in the region of Araguaia. In this way, fruit pulp production has been converted into an example of the region's natural wealth. The plant has reached an annual production of 100 kilos of frozen pulp from 350,000 kilos of collected fruit, generating close to $230,000 USD of income for farmers.
