Description: The Indigenous Forestry Association of Madre de Dios (AFIMAD) has achieved great progress on activities related to the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa). This association brings together seven indigenous communities from the Madre de Dios region dedicated to the sustainable collection, use, and commercialization of brazil nuts. With an annual production of about 430 tons and more than 120 beneficiary families, AFIMAD encourages and promotes this economic activity through capacity building workshops on sustainable forest management and organic certification with a focus on an Internal Control System (SIC). The latter allows monitoring good practices in brazil nut harvesting.
